Mountain Trekking
Conquer majestic peaks: exploring Africa's best
Tanzania rewards people who look beyond the parks. Kilimanjaro is the obvious draw, but Mount Meru offers one of the finest crater walks in East Africa with a fraction of the foot traffic. And for those who want something genuinely unlike anything else, Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano in the Rift Valley, sacred to the Maasai, that erupts a rare carbonatite lava cool enough to approach on foot.
Mountain trekking in Tanzania ranges from a half-day hike on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro to a nine-day summit attempt on the Northern Circuit. Mount Meru is typically a three-to-four day climb and is often used as acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro. The views from Meru’s crater rim across to Kilimanjaro on a clear morning are among the best in East Africa.
All of our mountain treks are guided by experienced, accredited guides who have completed the routes dozens of times. Permits, park fees, porter support and equipment advice are all arranged as part of your trekking package. We match the route and pace to your fitness level and timeline.
If you’re considering mountain trekking as part of a wider Tanzania itinerary — combined with a safari in the Serengeti or a few days in Zanzibar — we can build that into a single joined-up trip. Most people find the combination of wildlife and wilderness more rewarding than either experience alone.
