Most travellers pass through Arusha on the way to somewhere else. That’s understandable, but the city rewards a day spent properly inside it rather than just passing through.
Arusha sits at the foot of Mount Meru and has been a trading crossroads for a long time. The mix of Maasai, Chagga, Meru, and other communities that have converged here gives the markets and streets a character that is distinctly Tanzanian without being easy to categorise. The central market is the best place to start: produce, spice, second-hand clothing, hardware, everything stacked and arranged in a way that makes sense to everyone except a newcomer. Your guide helps you navigate it and introduces you to the people behind the stalls.
The town has genuine historical weight. Arusha was the site of the East African Community headquarters and the location of the Arusha Declaration, one of the defining political documents of post-independence Tanzania. The National History Museum and the cultural heritage sites around the centre put the city in context for those interested in understanding how Tanzania became what it is.
Lunch is Tanzanian, chosen by your guide rather than from a tourist menu. Ugali, mchuzi, mishkaki from a roadside grill: food that reflects where you actually are.
It is a good day for anyone who wants to understand the country beyond its parks.
