Materuni Hot Spring

Materuni Waterfall and Coffee Tour
On the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, about an hour from Arusha, Materuni is one of those hidden places most visitors skip because they are heading on their way to the northern parks. That’s a mistake.
This day starts in Materuni Village, where coffee has been grown for generations. Your guide walks you through the plantation, explains how the beans are processed, and usually ends with a cup brewed the traditional way. From there a forest hike brings you to the waterfall, a serious cascade dropping into a pool surrounded by dense green vegetation. It’s not a gentle stroll, but it’s not a demanding climb either.
After the waterfall, the hot springs. The thermal pools sit in the forest and are genuinely restorative after the hike. Most people stay longer than they planned.
The Materuni day trip combines three things that are hard to find together on a single excursion: genuine cultural exchange with a Chagga coffee farming community, a rewarding hike through montane forest on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, and the unexpected pleasure of soaking in natural hot springs at altitude. The village is small, the guides are local, and the experience has nothing of the tourist circuit about it.
Suitable for all fitness levels with moderate hiking ability. Bring water, sunscreen and a swimsuit. You’re back in Arusha by late afternoon.
