Mount Meru
Arusha’s own mountain, and one of the finest climbs in East Africa.
At 4,566 metres, Meru is Tanzania’s second highest peak and sits close enough to Arusha to see from the city. Most climbers pass it on their way to Kilimanjaro. That’s a mistake.
The crater rim walk, the wildlife in the forest on the lower slopes, and the views across to Kilimanjaro at sunrise make it a serious climb in its own right, with a fraction of the crowds.
Climbing Mount Meru: Tanzania’s Second Peak
The climb takes you through dense forest on the lower slopes, where buffalo and giraffe move between the trees, before opening into moorland and then the rocky upper sections of the crater rim. It is a proper mountain, with real altitude and real reward at the top.
The summit push is done at night, as with Kilimanjaro. What you find at the top at first light is a clear view across to Kilimanjaro and, on a good morning, all the way to Kenya. Very few climbers are up there with you.
We guide Meru with the same care we bring to every climb: honest pacing, guides who know the route in every season, and enough days on the mountain to give your body time to adjust. It is a climb that deserves more attention than it gets, and one that tends to stay with people longer than they expect.
